My Learning Style and Flipped Learning

I have to be upfront with this. In all honesty, I've never liked the question of what type of learner am I. I feel this way because I think I fall into different styles depending on the subject or the concept. That being said, I have found that one learning style that has been consistently one of the best learning styles for me across all areas. That style is hands-on learning.

The reason why I feel a hands-on approach is most effective for me is rather personal, but I am comfortable to share it. I have been diagnosed with learning disabilities at an early age. Fortunately, through an IEP, I've received a lot of support and I've learned various techniques along the way to help me succeed through my academic career. I am eternally thankful for that. But I digress. I can attribute my success and understanding of subjects to the hands-on approach various teachers used to demonstrate their concepts to me. I've had professors during my undergrad use this approach to help me learn or understand, as well. So, this is why I would say the hands-on learning style is my preferred learning style.

So, in comparing hands-on learning to flipped learning, I see how there are parallels and how they could work in conjunction with each other. I think flipped learning could be successful if facilitated with a hands-on approach in mind. However, if I were a young student and had to experience flipped learning, I probably wouldn't like it. I see myself getting frustrated if I don't understand the concept or lesson because it was explained in a way that didn't make sense to me. Also, I see myself getting frustrated if the demonstration provided was too fast. This could lead me to take even more time to complete an assignment and that would be counterproductive, in my opinion.

  1. I 100% agree with you! I am very much a hands-on learner, i have been in various scenario's where someone would show me and expect me to do the task and i honestly wouldn't be able to do it at all, i learn hands-on and i take notes so if for whatever reason i forget, i can go back to my notes and boom! I struggled in school as well and had a IEP as well, so to be able to relate to you on this level honestly made me happy! I don't like flipgrid as much as the average person but i do enjoy hands-on and a patient teacher as most people learning do because at times learning can be very challenging! AMAZING POST!!!!
